Upcoming Spring & Summer Events

What are some of your plans or goals for this year?

Some of my plans are to race in 4 to 5 bike races. The guys that I ride with talked me into trying a triathlon. My goal is just to finish it. The biking and swimming part should go okay. Any advice for a non-long distance runner? (If someone runs in front of me with a bag of Oreos could make it easier) The one we are thinking of doing is a 500 yard swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 5K run. It doesn't look so bad as I type it.

I always do the MS ride in September.

We hope to get to the beach for a couple long weekends.

Fishing season is right around the corner for those fishermen / women out there.

Golfing season hopefully will begin soon as well.

Two Mondays ago I got out skiing for the first time in two years (and still walking). I almost forgot how much fun it is. Two years ago my wife and I went out and on the first run down I cramped up and wiped out pretty hard. As I laid there in the snow (trying to figure out what just happened) she continued down the slope. I finally made it down to her (10 minutes later) and said "I'm done". That was the last time I had the skiis on. So I was a little nervous going out the other day.

Any of you hunters out there planning any big trips?

What are some vacation destinations this year?

Oh, good thread Randy!

We've recently got into gardening, and I want to grow enough vegetables (and a variety) so as not to have to buy them at the supermarket anymore. Reducing our carbon footprint and all that.

We're planning on doing some hiking during Easter Break and during the summer.

We're back in the U.S. the last week of May. My mom is now in Good Shepherd Hospital in Allentown, and when I spoke to her on the phone last night, she informed me she wants a 75th birthday party (it's her birthday on 28th May) and all her children and grandchildren HAVE to be there. I will meet you all at the Blue Monkey for a drink!

Finally, off to Creuse in France for 2 weeks in August. We've rented a house with a pool, and we'll do lots of hiking, cycling and eating while we're there!

Vicki, good to hear about your mother improving. Make sure you post early about your return to the homeland; I am sure we will come out for a drink (or some of us for a water/lemon - it's a diet thing).

Just let me know when you are going back to the US and I'll come up to see you and your family!!!

Randy, just start training for the run easy. A 5K is 3.1 miles so I would map a course out and start by jogging a little and then walking a little. Many people say to start out with 1 minute of each, but I would see how you feel when you try it for the first time. Try to do it at least 3 times a week and should be fine by the time the triathalon comes.

Rob is taking summer courses for college and then usually works the other weeks so I probably won't get a vacation again this year. No big deal.

Thanks for the adivice Sonya. We run every Saturday morning. We average anywhere from 3 to 5 miles a run. Last week we did 5.5 but I only made it about 3.5 and did a fast walk the rest of the way. My ankles are shot and after 3 miles they are on fire. I still like the idea of someone out in front with a bag of Oreos. I couldn't ask Kristen because she would eat all of them before I ever caught her.

Unfortunately, we won't be going on a family vacation...again...this year. But we promised ourselves next year is the year. I am dying to get to the ocean! So it will be either Myrtle Beach or VA Beach. This year we'll just do our usual day trips.

Hey Randy...your comments always make me LOL! Were you this funny when we were young? ;o)

Vicki...good news about your Mom! We may come up to PA in May instead of making the trip home for Easter. So maybe we'll end up there at the same time!

We are heading to Canada for our annual fishing trip in July and will spend a few long weekends at Lake Oneida.......hoping to take a few days in September to celebrate our anniversary somewhere without the kids. I also promised Austin an overnight trip to NY city and will hopefully do a few days at the beach. I plan to save for a big trip next year when I turn 40....something tropical with crystal clear blue water.

Vicki, glad to hear your mom is getting better, coming home over Memorial Day should be a good time for a bunch of us to try to get together...

Randy, its funny you mention me..when i read your post I thought to advise you no oreos during the swim, too soggy (if there is a such thing) anyway, as far as running in front of you with them, change that to putting me on something motorized and i'll think about it, one for you, two for me

March 29 I am going with Jake on a Varsity C trip to NY, NIT basketball championship game

May 16 trip with jake to NY for Lion King

June, hopefully an anniversary trip..maybe just weekend to Philly to see Tim McGraw & Faith Hill at Wachovia Center

July, 2 weeks in Myrtle Beach

funny thing about oreos, or any cream filled cookie, like Nutter Butters at this very moment...Trisha just opens them and eats the inside...one night I went to grab the bag of PB filled Oreos and there were like 2 whole ones left, all the rest were just the outside that she put back after licking off the insied

Jamie - That's a good question? I think I just learned to open up more over the years and just be myself. Life is way to serious to take serious. I'm always joking around and pulling pranks on my co-workers.......but they give it right back to me. I'm glad someone likes my twisted sense of humor.

Kristen - I'll have to look for a triathalon where the swim is in a giant pond of milk. What's this one for me two for you stuff? I'll be the one working for it.

Looks like some pretty good plans coming up.

Hi Everyone, glad to hear you have some fun activities planned over the next coming months. We are planning a week at the Outer Banks with a few other families, but that is about it. The rest will be baseball, baseball, and more baseball. All three of my boys play ball and my oldest, Joshua, will be playing on a tournament team also. Pretty much every day of the spring/summer we are at a baseball field somewhere. We might try to get a few weekends in camping, but we'll have to see.

Vicki, glad to hear that your mom is doing better, but I must have missed the post of what happened to her. Please fill me in.

If everyone is getting together in May, let us know early so we can plan on coming up. I would love to see everyone again!

I don't know Randy...that was a pretty delayed reaction to my question!

randyg said...

I'll give you that one. It did register late?

Hey Carol. Weren't you one those who had perfect attendance thru elementary, middle and high school? One of my co-workers mentioned today that he had perfect attendance, and you came to mind.

Randy, if you're swimming and riding, with a little running, you'll be fine for the triathlon. Are you running just one day a week? You need to start doing some brick workouts - a few minutes each of run, ride, run, ride, etc. You can do those more easily at the gym, but your muscles have to get used to the transition. Also get acclimated to whatever liquids you plan on drinking during the race beforehand, plus what you eat before the race. Don't eat too much before thinking you need it, it's not that long a race. I made that mistake in my first one. But be adamant about drinking every 10 minutes max on your ride.

Swimming advice. Unless you consider yourself a really good swimmer, don't start near the front. You'll only get run over, so to speak. Be prepared to get pushed under about 10 times.

Post the link to the race so I can check it out.

Hi, all! Thinking summer already?!

We're planning our last 'family of three' vacation which will be decidely short due to the baby on the way. We'll be heading to New York in May like Kristen. Shuli is dying to see Phantom of the Opera; she loves all kinds of musicals. Once the baby is born I want to take a road trip to Texas to visit family. Otherwise, that's it for us this year.

Vicki---so happy to hear your mom is doing better!!

kristen said...

Terrie, when is the baby due?

TerriE said...

Kristen,
The baby is due June 7th and is now weighing in at 2 lbs., 2oz.! Did you get anything special for the older brother(s) when you had a baby? I want to get Shuli something special but she's 9yrs. old and it's hard to find something for that age. (I recently was told that I have placenta previa so I want to get some stuff done ahead of time in case I don't go to full term.) Any ideas are welcome!!

kristen said...

no terrie, i didnt...jake was 9 days away from turning 10, and being a boy, it is difficult. I dont even think Lucas got the "I'm a big brother" shirt like Jake did was Lucas was born...anyway, I think they just enjoyed the "boys only day" while i was in the hospital, so maybe your hubby can take Shuli to dinner or have a special day/night with her while you are in the hospital

Pauko, I was pretty close to having perfect attendance. I think the only day I missed in high school was when Denise and I took off to go skiing.

randyg said...

So Pauko.....what's the big deal if someone had perfect attendance? I never missed a day! Get ready......cause here is the part where I fall off my chair laughing.........L O L......Okay....I'm back in the chair. That's still funny though.

that is funny Randy I remember taking a day a week off from tech.

MJ - don't let your kids read that last comment.
