Food Combinations

We all have read that Matt eats (or ate) Oreos with OJ, but did you know he used to eat (and still probably does to this day) peanut butter toast with OJ?

I still have to drink milk (be it skim now) with a ham/cheese sandwich. And my ham/cheese sandwich design has remained the same since my mom refused to make them for me as a young boy (due to my idiosyncracy - I know, which one) because I have to have mayo on both pieces of bread and then the stack must be ham, mustard, cheese (repeated two more times). It's funny, but my wife refuses to make them that way for me too.

Anybody else have some food combos that you insist upon?

When I go to Perkins for my usual breakfast, ham and cheese omelette with buttermilk pancakes (that is how I ALWAYS order it), I have never tried the berry or apricot syrup for fear that I won't like it and it would ruin my whole meal. I have at least gotten away from having to order milk with the pancakes (I like COFFEE with A WHOLE lotta lumps).

I remember Tim C. used to put mustard on his fries and always drank the half/half tubs at the Rainbow diner (for all you that have moved away, they finally tore it down, but I heard the ground is permanently greasy).

Fire away folks. Also, who was the 10,000th visitor? Anybody know?

Michelle, I forgot that I have to have Campbell's tomato soup with milk (not water) with my grilled cheese. Any other way is sacreligious.

My peanut butter and jelly sandwich must be made with peanut butter on one side with the jelly on top of that piece of bread. If the sandwich is made with jelly put on the other piece of bread, I don't like it. I know it should be the same, but it's not!!!

Isn't Campbell's tomato soup suppose to be made with milk?? I couldn't even imagine it made with water. Yuck!!

i cant say that i have any real weird food combinations, but the egg & ketchup thing is gross...i like my mac & cheese with stewed tomatoes, i just had a peanut butter & fluff sandwich the other day, and today I had my fill of peanuts & boogers...3 hours in the ER to have a doctor take 2 seconds to remove the peanut from trisha's nose...

my regular order at perkins is the everything omelet with pancakes and iced tea, and michelle, i love the southern sweet tea also, we get our fill during the 2weeks we are in Myrtle Beach and usually make it at home for a few weeks after that

and steve, the mayo AND mustard on the sandwich is gross!! i dont blame your wife for not making it

Kristin, thanks for the laugh! I hope Trisha wasn't too traumatized by Mr. Peanut! Today my husband took the baby with him to Wal-Mart and decided to treat himself to a Cadbury's Cream Egg. He was going through self-checkout and turned around to get his cream egg, and Chris (my 11 month old son) had grabbed it and stuffed it in his mouth (foil wrapper and all). John couldn't put it through the checkout because by the time he wrestled it out the baby's hands, Chris had eaten the bar code.

I like mayonnaise on my fries, but that's not weird, is it? I'll eat ketchup on eggs but only if the eggs are in an omelette. Ketchup on eggs cooked any other way is just wrong.

My weird food combination is mixing my corn in the mashed potatoes. I can't stand one without the other and the ratio of corn must be just right!! Of course, butter must be included for it to be perfect. Creamed corn is absolutely disgusting to me & I can't even look at it when I'm shopping for the regular corn.

Steve, grilled cheese and tomato soup (made w/milk) is my ultimate comfort food; a staple on any rainy day!!

Kristen, sorry about Trisha but it did make me chuckle! I'm sure there's a story behind how the peanut arrived in her nose;) Hope she's doing okay!

michelle, we try to make sweet tea but it just doesnt taste the same...i do not like those cream eggs! but that was a funny story too..what is it with kids these days...it has been the week from hell here..trisha puking monday night...both boys puking tuesday night and home from school today, no real story behind the peanut, she was eating them & i was making lucas lunch, she told jake "get this peanut out of my nose" he says "what?" she said "i stuck a peanut up my nose" what possesses a child to do that? she was not bad at the ER, she was so proud of herself when they would ask her why she was there "i stuck a peanut up my nose" and she kept asking them "do you like my (hospital)bracelet?" yesterday we were in the bathroom, i was getting ready to leave and she climbed up on the toilet and grabbed the triaminic. i figured no big deal, child proof cap..well, not trisha proof, she had a whole cup poured before i looked down as she was about to drink it, luckily i got it in time....some days i think i need to get a job! my boys were never like her!

So Kristen....how did that peanut taste after they removed it? 5 Second Rule or 3 Hour rule.....they're just the same. Just kidding......hope she is okay but the story made me laugh. Can we get Brad to go for both nostrils?

Kristen - We went down to Philly to the Franklin Institute today to see the King Tut exhibit and who do we run into? Aunt Karen and Uncle Loni and Billy with Patrick. I haven't seen them in a while.

If anyone wants to see a great exhibit then you have to see this one. We also did the IMax show "Mystery of Ancient Eygypt".

Steve,
Your sandwich sounds like a "Dagwood sandwich". Ever see the 'Blondie' movies in black and white or the comic strip in Sunday's paper? Just reminded me of it.
Kristen,
You deserve a medal! Brad owes you flowers or something for being so resilient. At least the week's almost over... :)

ha ha randy, i was going to keep it for scrapbooking, but that thought didnt last long..i see Karen & Loni just about twice a month, she is great!

terrie...tell me about it, since now Brad is also sick! cant

Kristen, Michelle,

Cracker Barrell has awesome sweat tea -to rival true southern sweet tea. Chick-fil-a is normally good too!

Kristen - I'm with you on the Eggs & Ketchup. Although I'm a ketchup only kind of guy - that's not an enticing combo. I'll stick to it on my burgers & dogs.

michelle, i'm not sure "fun" is the right choice of words?!

Mac& cheese with stewed tomatoes on top

I also do the corn on top of mashers like Terrie.
Ketchup on scrambled eggs like Michele also.
My weirdest, though I don't use ketchup often anymore is mashed potatoes with saurkraut on top, then ketchup, usually New year's day with the pork.

kristen said...

challenge is the better word...

ketchup on top of saurkraut...yuk, double yuk!

Jamie said...

I do ketchup on scrambled eggs and on mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. My husband was convinced I was the only one in the world who did this(besides my Mom!). Ofcourse my daughter, who loves ketchup, thinks it's great when I let her put it on her eggs!

I put ketchup on eggs when I don't like the taste of them. Yuck for the sauerkraut and mashed potatoes!!!

I'm still trying to figure out if I have any food quirks.... the rest of you are making me feel pretty normal these days.

When I was a kid, I use to eat cheese and mustard sandwiches.....and dipped them in Coca-Cola. I must admit...I have tried it recently (substituting Diet Coke)...and it is still AWESOME!!!

Jeff P said...

Sounds like there are a LOT of ketchup and eggs lovers out there....must be Catty thing!

Longe -you're on your own with the Mustard!

I'll vote yes on scrambled eggs and ketchup, grilled cheese and tomato soup, and Terrie's mashed potato and corn combo (my wife introduced that to me...must be a polish thing).

No on coffee (I drink hot tea, and yes, Michelle, one must drink sweet tea in the south), and longe and steve's funky mustard sandwich and dipping combo's.

In high school, Dan introduced me to crackers and ketchup, but haven't had that in a while.

In the south, anything that clogs your heart is considered a staple item. Grits anyone?

I'd like to hear what everyone's favorite cultural (right word?) meal is. We make pigs in a blanket alot, hamburger/rice wrapped in cabbage.

How about hot sauces? Any fans out there? Cholula is a good one.

Vicky said...

Pauko I would KILL for some grits! No ever heard of a grit over here. Usually when I visit the U.S., grits are one of the things I bring home (along with Hershey's kisses, Marshmallow Peeps AND Cholula Hot Sauce!)

My favorite British food is Toad in the Hole. Don't ask me why they call it that. It's a giant Yorkshire pudding with sausages cooked in it.

kristen said...

pauko, to us, pigs in a blanket is hotdogs wrapped in crescent rolls, and the rice/burger in cabbage is halupki! when I lived at home, my dad and his buddies always made stuffed pig stomachs on New Years Day. He learned it from my mom's parents, and his buddies still carry on that tradition today. When I was much younger, my granfather used to eat sardine sandwiches, which I also ate with him, today we just eat the Kipper snacks right out of the can. And I have a weakness for Lays Kettle Cooked potato chips.

Dave,

I belive The beef & rice wrapped in cabbage are called Hilopcues (Spelling?) -a polish staple from the depression. I also like Periogies!! My Grandmother used to make both of those -plus some Hungarian potatoe caserole. I wish I had asked her for some of those recipes (I think they were just in her head, never on paper!).

Jeff

pauko27 said...

Jeff, yes, halupki's (sp?). Good call.

kristen said...

hey, wait a minute, Jeff gets all the credit?...didnt either of you read my post before his? Jeff, did you cheat like this all through school?

LongE said...

mashed potato's and corn is a staple. Now try a spoon full of applesauce with your potatos and you've really got something! Must be something about the whole "hot and cold" thing.

pauko27 said...

Kristen, yes, we obviously overlooked it. You can get extra credit if you list a few more specialty dishes.

when I was young I ate ketchup on everything. Kristen's dad used to call me the ketchup kid.....now I save it for hamburgers and French fries mostly but everytime my daughter doesn't like the meat we are having I catch myself saying just dip it in a little ketchup. Works like a charm everytime.

One thing I am fussy about is when I eat chocolate cake it has to have white icing nothing else will do.

TerriE said...

Two things...
1). I now have proof that I'm not the only person that mixes mashies and corn!
2). Damn! There's some weird stuff you guys eat! (A bit nauseating for a pregnant woman to read.)

mj jones said...

now pregnancy puts a whole new spin on foods, with Austin I craved fried onions and with Lindsey I had to have a white iced doughnut almost daily during my 2nd trimester. That might explain her sweet tooth.

pauko27 said...

MJ, I never noticed your daughter was named Lindsey, as is mine but with an 'a'. Lindsay Abigail...chose it myself, and my wife chose Benjamin Albert(Albert, my middle name and from the Schuler side - Brad's dad was Albert and our grandfather).
