I always wondered if our blog would get out...Maybe we should watch what we say about the teachers!
Received by email from Mr. Abbott:
Hello Class of '86,
Greetings from one of your "old" teachers!
I just had the opportunity to reminisce on your elementary grades experience by checking out the blog of "Sheckler Memories." Thank you for all the kind remarks. By the way, there are still a few us oldtimers still at Sheckler - Mrs. Zarambo, Mrs. Misko (Miss Sheska), Mrs. Dunn (Miss Hagenbuch), Mrs. Hassler (Miss Sundy), Mrs. Breslin, Mrs. Beisel, Mr. Nothstein, and Mr. Misko (retiring as principal this year!) Also, Mrs. Abbott (Miss Shoemaker) is teaching 5th grade at Lincoln. (By the way, she IS the anonymous entry on the blog identifying all the kids on the picture of her class)
I have taught for almost 31 years now, but the class I remember most fondly is the 4th grade class that many of you were a part of. I will always treasure the lively games of "Silent Ball", your own created "Rhyme Time" Puzzles (a lemon-tasting rose is a ... sour flower), extended recess games of kickball and touch football, our unique version of "The Wizard of Oz" (yes, Frank Olszewski was Toto), and even the snow day at the "Three Dips!" That's where I learned in a spontaneous science experiment that a 180 pound man will glide down the 1st dip, fly over the 2nd dip, and land flat on his face at the top of the 3rd dip! You may also recall the "Ain't Money" Jar, where we collected a penny every time someone made grammatical errors like "Me and my friends...", "Him and I..." or used inappropriate words like "ain't" or "yous" . After the jar was filled, we used the money to buy treats for a class party. (Note to Judy Almazon - after enjoying your colorful blog entries, I figure you owe approximately $721.56!
I've often wondered about you guys and I hope you are happy and healthy. Have a wonderful 20th reunion!
Mr. Abbott
pauko - too much. wow.
That is really, really cool. I wonder if he still has any of the newspapers we did with Mr. Connors' class (hint hint - just in case he checks in again).
And it looks like Pauko owes me some money!
i think we know who the anonymous comments were. very cool. i'm feeling gyped that i only had Mr.Abbott for a couple months of math.
what a great surprise! we truly did have great memories and again we owe a huge thanks to those who created this for us to come and blog away!!!
I suppose I do if you can prove Rusty didn't do it, either.
Hi Mr. Abbott! *waves*
Pauko & Mullen, you're obsessing over the whole Rusty/Toto thing. Let it go dudes.
Welcome aboard Tom.
Mr. Abbott if you check back in you really were the best teacher. My mom (Elaine) works in the school cafeteria and she always speaks highly of you as well. I too remember themoney jar now if Judy keeps talking maybe we will have enough money for a really fancy reunion. Thanks for checking in. I hope they have our class picture and post it soon so we can all see who the truly lucky 4th graders were.
Mr Abbott, nice to have you on board! I didn't have him, but it sounds like he had a fun class. I did have Miss Shoemaker for 3rd grade. It is fun to get a teacher's perspective of our class.
Dave--I think that Mr. Abbott pretty much cleared up any remaining doubt.
V--I'm not obsessing. You have to realize that for the past 20 years, Dave has enjoyed taking the contrary position on numerous topics, simply to be the instigator. The first 10-12 years, it was funny. Now, not so much. But that's just Dave being Dave.
Mullen, I had no idea. Give him hell!
Vicki, this is what we do. And as you can tell from this blog, Mullen argues ad nauseum with long posts.
Not true.
ohmygod. mr. abbott veiwing the blog. i better clean my act up.
that would be "clean up your act".
one dollar please.
judy---keep it real, please. I didnt have Mr Abbott, but I'm sure he appreciates your candor
as you can see, abbott didn't have any real influence on my education.
You could've at least cursed Judy on your comment. You're starting to let me down......damn it.
Judy- get on the Reunion options. Need to make sure you're there. thinking Oct 7th weekend. (Columbus Day)
It's only appropriate that Mr. Abbott logged in. He always had a way of being in touch with what was going on. I remember him taking some of my $$ that year. The way I see it - he owes us some of that $$ Back. Perhaps he can swing by the Blue Monkey to buy a round!!
Seriously, my favorite Sheckler memory (one of the few I remember in my old age) was tricking him into throwing me the Nerf Football at recess, when I was on defense, hollering "I'm open, I'm open" (This never seemed to work on Varsity -we always RAN the Ball) and then when he threw it - I high tailed it the other way for a TD. I recall he wasn't too happy beign tricked!
Jeff
A followup from Mr. Abbott by email:
I found out about the blog through Todd Long. He is friends with another Sheckler teacher and she forwarded me the blog address. Don't worry about what you say about teachers - you're just stating your opinions from when you were 10 years old! And like other educators, I had a slew of teachers when I was in school - some good, and some not so good!
Yeah, I remember the track meet and how we planned it out. Your class was a great bunch of smart, inquisitive, and colorful characters who enjoyed learning
and had lots of fun doing it.
I've been teaching Technology here at Sheckler for the past 15 years. I see kids from 1st thru 4th grade once a week for 50 minutes. We do a daily news show
with morning announcements produced by 3rd and 4th graders. We develop public speaking skills, discuss TV commercials, and even make our own class videos. We
also do a lot of computer activities - Microsoft Word documents, Powerpoint presentations, Internet research, etc. It's fun and I don't have any problems motivating the kids. However, I do miss the closeness of having one group of kids for a whole year.
I've truly enjoyed seeing the names of my former students - you, Todd, Judy, Maryjo, Vicki, etc. I might check in from time to time on the blog, but I don't want to inhibit you guys from saying what you feel about stuff. Hey, I'm just
like you...just a little older! I was only 24 when you were in my class! Ahhh!
Take care!
Tom Abbott
Dave=Rat.
Dave just needs to leverage his "student/teacher relationship" to our benefit....drinks!!
Longe, hey, I'm just the bearer of info. Maybe you want to put our blog on every Tastykake you deliver to spread the word faster?
