Catty Gangland?

I read an article in the Morning Call online that really makes me wonder what's happening in Catty. If you still live there - or nearby - thoughts? Is it still the nice little town we grew up in, or is it (as we say here in Yorkshire) as rough as a badger's arse?

I think downtown on Front St. from Race to say Walnut is all hud housing and low income. Lots of riff raff came in from Allentown over the last say 5-6 years. I am sure Kristen knows more and will add to it. My mom worked at Sheckler in the cafeteria for many years and she would always mention how kids have gotten worse and worse. They come in for free lunch and breakfast but have a diamond earing in there ear. You know the type.

Yeah, I know the type. I teach that type. I've been away a long time. What is hud housing?

hud housing is low income housing, you have to be below certain income levels. hud is a government agency - housing and urban developemnt, I think is what it stands for.

You see this in many small suburban towns. Landlords buy in these small towns because the housing prices are cheap on older homes. They then turn around and make it H.U.D. and the next thing you know there is more and more crime in these smaller communities. Many of the new housing developments that I see going in are all being bought up by New York and New Jersey residents moving here. These communities then begin to see more crimes taking place that they never had before. We are the dumb ones for sitting back and watching it happen right before our own eyes. Too many self serving politicians are to blame for a lot of the issues at hand today. The criminals have more rights than the victims anymore. How many of you go out at night anymore? Fear has made many people too scared to go out at night therefor making them prisoners to their own home. Don't you remember playing block chase at night running through neighborhoods and just being kids? Would you let your own child do that today? We have taken away the authority of teachers, police officers, and anyone else in a position of authority and we all stood back and watched it happen. Our prisons are at full capacity to the point we have to constantly build addtional ones. So I ask you what is the solution? How do we take back our communities and schools?

I remember when the HUD housing started, about 12 yrs ago.
Mrs. Lathrop and maybe about 5 other residents went to the board meeting to protest letting Hud in. It was sort of hush hush and easily pushed thru.

A year later, Scott Shander caught a 13yr old kid breaking inot his garage, at 3 am. Came from the Hud section. Hud housing brings alot of problems along with crime anywhere I see it. Northern Lehigh got HUD about 2 yrs ago, crime went way up.

Front street was better off when the Pagans were there.

I wish I had a choice as to wether or not to let my kids walk somewhere living in the country has it's perks but I wish my kids had a neighborhood like I did growing up. I HAVE to drive them everywhere.

Well, I spoke with my mom last night who informed me that her neighbor's outdoor lighting (along the front walkway) has been smashed recently. This is the second time this has happened. I don't let Georgia walk anywhere alone. She is allowed to ride her bike to John's dad's house (1/2 mile away) but she has to call me AS SOON AS SHE GETS THERE, otherwise I'm panicking. It's sad, because when we were kids, during the summer, we left the house in the morning and didn't come back until supper, and no one worried what was going to happen to us.
