I took my 9th graders into the computer lab today and while they were getting on with their work, I was getting on with my own. The girls sitting next to me asked me how I learned to type so fast. I told them all about Mr. Celin and the huge typewriters we had to learn on back in the day. They were impressed that, 20 years after the fact, I can still type at speed.
Joe Bear (see pic at left) taught me well.

I get the same comments at work - I am still amazed that other schools don't offer typing classes and make it mandatory like ours.
well, they dont have typing anymore, but brad teaches computers and he has to teach kids the correct way
can't say I ever learned to type I used to have to go on the one that was blank, my son has keyboarding this year in 6th grade
It's funny how some things stay with you that you never thought you would need. I'm the typist at work and my buddies are always amazed when I start typing away. When I tell them that one of my football coaches taught me to type they just laugh.
I always loved typing to music.
"Let's Dance" He liked Bowe
(Typing J,K,J,K)
The best was, he let Rusty and I bring in our own music.
The typewriters didn't hold up very well with the Ramones. :)
I believe he started every class with, "Ok folks, fingers on the home row, eyes on the Key Type Trainer, Beeegin!"
Every time you add something to the blog, indirectly it is his fault (or credit) that we can do it so well.
My students say the same thing about how fluently I can type (last time I tested, 75 wpm with 90% accuracy using a keyboarding program at school).
Hey, the blogger fairies corrected my spelling AND added a picture!
I'm not a fairy. I just figured everyone wanted to see how Joe looks now (just like he did in the 80's).
It is always amazing how the memories come back. Who could forget Joe Bear and the home row? Poor Mr. Celin was the brunt of many jokes, but he did teach us well. Typing was one of those classes that at the time you are taking it it was sort of a joke, but now I see it as one of the best classes. It is one of the few things I remember. I also liked Senior math because we learned the practical things like balancing a check book, reading maps and the practical things you really use all the time.
carol, i agree, senior math rocks! that and typing are practically all that helps me through my days
I never had Celin....I waited to take typing til our Sr. Year. I had a ton of fun with Todd Woodring and some of the other Jr's. Mantz was already "checked out" at that point....but he had a really HOT Student Teacher....she rocked the class.
I heard she was seen out at some BYOB's......with some recent Grads....can't remember her name, but I do remember the "home row"....I think the "Milk Man" (Celin) had a dual purpose for the "hands on the home row" if you know what I mean! (Only Kidding Mr. Celin -if you ever read this!).
