well, I know Joe & agree this situation is very sad. Mr. A started the year that we all started 5th grade. I have never heard any parent or child speak bad of him. I was hoping Jake would have him for 4th grade, but was not so lucky! He always had a smile & a hug for everyone he greeted. He's been a dedicated teacher, mentor & friend for 31 years in our district. I do not know if he was or wasnt using during the school day (I would like to think not) and definately dont condone that. The district is under much scrutiny right now and everyone wants to point fingers and throw stones. Addicts find ways to hide from everyone. What people fail to remember is that we've all done things we are not proud of (and/or just never got caught). Just because he is a teacher doesnt mean he isnt human. Some people also forget that. We all have weaknesses, some worse than others. If you have or have had someone close to you who suffered from an addiction, you know it isnt easy to get that person out of denial and clean up their act. Mr. A. has a young son & a beautiful wife (inside & out). The more people who take time to understand his weakness & pray for his recovery, rather than condemn him, the better this community & our children will learn from this mistake. I dont have an opinion as to whether he should be let back in the classroom, or not, and that is not for us to decide. Only those who know the entire truth, reasons & man after the recovery will have to make that decision. And, I think they will take the easy way out, and say "no".

What a shame, I hope he wasn't using when around kids but I agree with Kristen in that addiction is a terrible thing. I hope he gets well, he was by far an excellent teacher and I remember him well as always being my favorite.

disreguard my comment about the favorite teacher I was thinking of Mr. Abbott. Still how sad!! My mom worked at Sheckler for many years and liked him but she did mention he was a bit hyper when I told her the news.....hmmmm
