It's the great pumpkin Charlie Brown!

I know it's too early for Halloween and it's not really that great a pumpkin, but it is our first ever pumpkin from our pumpkin patch. I'm just impressed that we grew anything at all.
We've got three big ones still on the vine. I hope they'll be ready for Halloween!

I hate to even think of Halloween I HATE the cold weather. All the stores have fall stuff out and I find it rather depressing. Cute picture though.

Your kids are so cute!!!! I think it is an impressive pumpkin - it's round and orange!

That pumpkin looks great. Like Sonya said...round & orange. Your kids seem very happy about that pumpkin. I am not ready for the cold weather either even though I like the fall season with football.

I love that photo! Your children are just adorable(would Georgia be offended at being called adorable at her age?).

I'm SO ready for fall. The 90 degree temperatures and humidity down here have gotten old.

I suppose every gardener already knows, but did you pick off buds to make a few bigger?
Are pumpkins annual or perennial?

Vicky said...

We actually didn't pick off the buds, because we (actually John - I take no responsibility for this) planted three varietes of pumpkin, but didn't label which was which. So he didn't want to pull of any buds without knowing what they were. The one you're looking at is a sugar pumpkin, but we also planted atlantic giants (which didn't grow at all) and another kind I can't remember the name of. This was our first year, so like I said for us to grow anything is a real bonus.

Actually, my neighbor is a pumkin farmer and he told me once that there are female and male flowers, only the females will produce and the males are needed to germinate. So I don't think you should pull any buds.

After the flower is fertilized, it buds a pumpkin.

The male doesn't really serve any purpose after that.

You're welcome, ladies.

Wrong Steve, Sonya.

You are right Donna -- I keep forgetting we have two Steve's commenting on the site now.

Thanks for pointing that out.

steve said...

Sonya, that's the kind of reply I associate with you.

steve said...

How's this?

kristen said...

does the male ever serve any purpose after fertilization!

Steve,

That I am a stupid blonde....that is what you remember about me?

Kristen,

I didn't have the guts to say it....

Sonya, not at all! I was using your comment from my 'tag' list - sorry if that came out wrong. I have a certain "knack" for that.
