Is everyone out Christmas shopping? Where is everyone?
I don't know if you remember, but a couple of weeks ago I mentioned that a Head of Department job had come up a swanky, private, posh girls' school in Sheffield and I was applying. I received a letter today inviting me to go for an interview on Tuesday, December 4. The letter also says, "Details of the lesson you will be teaching on the day will follow." And the letter is signed by the "Headmistress". Very, very posh!
So I got an interview. Yippeeeee! Now I think I want the job! Wish me luck people!

Good Luck Vicki...it's always exciting yet scary to make a move...hope you get what you want!!
Vicki, best of luck to you. Is this new position a teaching position (head of department)?
Thanks guys. Steve, it is a teaching position, but it's also a management position. I'll be in charge of the Modern Foreign Languages Department and will be given free time during the week to allow me to do that, plus teaching my Spanish classes. This school has a big MFL Department - 11 teachers! That's twice the size of the department I'm in now. My current job is Second in Department, which means if my Head of Department isn't around, I'm the HTIC. Head of Department is the first step to doing the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) which is the post-grad course you have to do in order to move up the ladder to Deputy Head (Asst Principal) and then Head (Principal). So, as you can see, I have delusions of grandeur!
Vicki, teaching for 18 years and thinking over and over again about moving to the "dark side" has me wanting to stay in the class room. In my district, I make $10,000 more than an assistant principal, I get my two months to refuel, and I only have to deal with my problems. I have gone into an assistant principal's office and seen his desk covered with discipline referrals. They are yellow, and I asked him if he was redecorating his office in "D-card Yellow", to which he said, "maybe I should, then they would blend in and I wouldn't seem so overwhelmed".
My current principal is Jeff Sodl (Whitehall - Class of '85), and his job is one I would not want either. I tried to talk him out of it years ago, but his wife wanted him to get a "more important job", and he saw the "green" light (more money because he hadn't had the years to get his salary to the top).
Hope I don't make you change your mind, Go for it. I may some day tire of the daily grind and become an administrator (just not in Stroudsburg). Anyway, get that job and remember what the Easter bunny told Bugs, "Keep smilin'".
Steve...I'm pretty sureJulie Kollar is married to a Sodl from Whitehall, but I dont think his name is Jeff, it escapes me right now...you would probably know if she was his wife....anyway, Brad has the same opinion about the "dark side" as you call it...why go there, more headache and of course, no summers!
Good luck Vicki! I give you so much credit for moving on and upwards. Once I had my teaching job, the thought of interviewing again was too overwhelming. Now I'm so rusty, I don't think I'd ever get hired!
Can't wait to hear how it goes!
So...can you be posh? ;o)
Vicki - Lots of luck! I am sure you will do great and they would be lucky to have you at their school. It's always exciting and scary to do something new. Keep us posted!
Oh, thanks everyone! Steve, if you want the big bucks you have to go to the dark side here. There's only so high you can go on the pay scale before you hit the top. Anyway, it's not about the money (no really), it's about getting out of public education and getting into the private sector. I'll earn more money, have more time off, and I'll actually teach kids who want to learn because Mom and Dad are paying for it! I might get there and think, "I can't work with these snobs" or I might love it. I don't know. They might not like me. They might already have someone in mind from within and are only going through the legal motions of advertising the job (which is a huge waste of everyone's time, IMO). But, I have to try. I'll never get any further at my current school unless I throw my Head of Department off the roof, because she's never, ever going to leave. It's too cushy.
Vicki,
Best of luck on your interview. Even if they have someone in mind, you could win them over with your experience, attitude, and personality. I have seen it many times here with the government where they thought they would be giving the job to someone within, but then someone from outside blows them away. You never know!!!
Again, I hope you get what you really want. I think it would be a good move because of all the reasons you listed. It would get you away from all the problems Steve listed.
Please keep us posted!!!
best of luck Vicki and thanks for keeping the blog alive.
I have been shopping a bit I have all the kids stuff and a few others done. I think I hve like 4 or 5 more gift to buy. Are family really scaled down a bit over the last few years. We just enjoy spending the time together.
Best wishes for your interview, Vicki!
